Biography

Nabil Hassan, MB. Bch. is a pediatric critical care specialist. He is visiting Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University Of Illinois School Of Medicine in Peoria Illinois, Chief of Division of pediatric critical care, and medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit.  Dr. Hassan graduated from Cairo University Medical School in Egypt with honors and in 1982 immigrated to the US. At that time he passed The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®), exam and the Visa Qualifying Exam (VQE), followed by formal training and board certification ingeneral pediatrics, neonatal/perinatal medicine and pediatric critical care medicine.

He had been at Helen Devos Children’s hospital/Spectrum Health for the past 25 years before he took on his current post at the UOI. His areas of expertise includes pediatric critical care, pediatric sedation, pediatric patient blood management. He is also an instructor for the FCCM and PFCCM courses.

Dr. Hassan is an active member of the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury & Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) and the Pediatric Critical Care Blood Research Network (BloodNet). He is a founding member of the Society for the advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM) since 2002, during which time he has lectured extensively and served as board member, executive committee member, chairman of strategic alignment, Education, Research and Annual Meeting Planning committees. He is currently serving as the president of SABM and chair of its Board of Directors.

Patient care is an area of great interest for Dr. Hassan, as he enjoys this field of medicine, closely interacting with his patients, while also teaching residents and medical students who then benefit from his expertise.  His clinical research is mainly in the area of pediatric transfusion along with blood conservation. He has several published manuscripts, and abstracts covering sedation and patient blood management.

Dr. Hassan serves as a reviewer for the following publications: Critical Care Medicine, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Transfusion, Blood Transfusion, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, in addition to the Journal of Pediatric and Neonatal Care.
